Why choose bamboo?

In textile form, bamboo retains many of the properties it has as a plant. Bamboo is highly water absorbent; able to store three times its weight in water. In bamboo fabric, this translates to an impressive absorptive power and excellent wicking ability that will pull moisture away from the skin and into the core of the nappy. Because it grows so quickly, bamboo is also an easily renewable resource. It requires 1/3 the amount of water to grow that cotton uses and has no natural pests. This means that bamboo can be grown with little to no use of pesticides or herbicides.

Bamboo fiber itself is naturally round and smooth. This means that there are no sharp spurs to irritate the skin, making it an excellent choice for products designed to be worn close to baby. Many people who are allergic to other natural fibers such as hemp or wool find bamboo to be a happy alternative.

Another plus for bamboo is its antibacterial qualities thanks to an antimicrobial bio-agent called “bamboo kun” which is found naturally in the fiber. This kun makes bamboo a naturally antibacterial, antifungal and odor resistant fiber, even through multiple washes.

Care:

Wash in Hot Water – When you first get your cloth nappy bamboo inserts, wash it in hot water to remove anything left behind from the manufacturing process and get it ready to be used. Your inserts will reach full absorbency after 10 washes but can start being used after just one wash.

Ban Fabric Softener – When washing your cloth nappy inserts for the first time, don’t use any fabric softeners; they coat the surface of fabric with chemicals that can reduce the fabrics feel and its absorbency too. This is a very important point to follow; a common reason for bamboo inserts losing their absorbency is because of fabric softener ingredients. Bamboo is soft enough that you won’t miss the fabric softener.

Dry Them Outside – To get the most out of your bamboo cloth nappy inserts, line dry until 90% dry and then pop it in the dryer to finish off. This will fluff up the fibers and help to maintain its absorbency. If you prefer not to use a dryer at all, line drying them is perfectly adequate.
